Artist statement

I used to love drawing as a child; I used to draw on bathroom walls when I was 5-year-old and then I started learning on my own and as I grew older. I was inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s work and then decided to study art for my higher education. This decision led me to learn the intricacies of each methodology and art practice and I began to represent my work as an artist and learn my own practices. Then, in 2018, it was a dream come true when I was able to showcase at Saskia Fernando Gallery, Colombo, an exhibition curated by artist T. Shanathanan. I created an identity of myself through my work.

. I find that the sea has become an important part of my life. Within these shores and bodies of water are corals. My grandfather was ‘sammatti’, fisherman who dove the waters and deep seas where there are diverse sea creatures. Growing up, I would hear stories about the underwater world. These stories instilled in me the curiosity about the sea and I would visit the beach to learn more.so started to drew corals since 2009.

In 2016 I stared to paint corals. I took on a new approach in my art practice as I did the work for ‘Sea Change’ in 2019 which were the coral hair sculptures. It was a rather newer medium that I used for this series. I instilled life into dead corals by making living coral visuals. It became a self-expressive notion that portrayed a physical-metal, conscious-unconscious connection between the coral and hair

In 2021 I explore the rapture within – and the invigoration, the enigma, and that of the ethereal in the soul. Whilst reflecting upon the rich bio diversity of the Jaffna Peninsula, through shape signify abstract forms of my body, that resemble corals. the transparency in material symbolizes my sprightly spirit and the colors, complimenting my vibrancy – the core essence of my soul.

Nostalgic (2022) my series of Mixed Media that reflect the past, present and future whilst placing a dent in time. Whilst the collection is a response to the present Sri Lankan economic crisis, my inventive use of traditional objects and cultural buildings of Jaffna in expressing my poignant sentiments stimulates one to ponder upon our values and our value systems.

When I was kid, I show some old objects which my mother and grand ma use to make meals and use for daily life. I inspired by those old things. our country situations really going worse and economically we all struggling still now. I really feel stressful life no electricity. No gas, no fuel and all essential product prices increase.  We depending all these products we can’t live without these. But I realized that my grand ma and my mother they somehow manage to survive and live happy life without those things. Really, I thought why we can’t live that old happy simple life. So I went back to that old life again such as using mud pots, wood cooker, oil lamps, hand mixer, handmade meal maker exc…I tried to live and manage to this country situation and I release from my mental stress.

Hereafter I love document my old memories through my art. so I use this traditional old object to my new series .so I used old objects which I show my grand ma kitchen and house. I companied old traditional objects and  my  old memories, buildings  which I show in my Jaffna. I collage all elements in to my art works. I draw and paint some out shapes of old objects and into the shapes I attached some traditional old significant elements which I show in my childhood. Also the colors which I use in my works more monochrome its also express my nostalgic memories.

This works more in to my old memories and 2022 situations of srilanka. This works release from my stress   because this new series I experiments some new way and I played like a child so overall its came as a collage. now I release stress from my head and I trying to live and go back to my old memories. This series expressing my nostalgic memories and what I lost now in my life today. now we are living machinery life I want to remind how my old generations live . As I mentioned through my art work I found old life into new way.

My recent 2025 works are mostly document and archiving Jaffna heritage and traditions through my art so from my memories I create a new art series about existence of Jaffna and lost history, traditions. These were the topics of my new works. In my art journey I love to experiment new technique and mediums to explore myself and my art.
