In this series, Memories of Nostalgia, i explores the themes of memory, trauma and hope through the reparative practices of archival research and collaging. Growing up in Jaffna during the civil war, i recalls the sounds of destruction and anguish that have been seared into my mind. Influenced by the frustration manifested in the Aragalaya/Porattam movement, Memories of Nostalgia seeks to envision a history of Jaffna that grapples with the peoples’ suffering and the loss of tradition and heritage due to conflict, corruption and discordance. Using colonial photographs sourced from the Jaffna Library, the Jaffna Museum and digital repositories, i began this series by layering the images over traditional objects that were once essential to the daily lives of Jaffna people such as oil lamps and pestles and mortars. Using photos of once-magnificent buildings, now dilapidated due to state neglect, defunct technologies and obsolete objects that remind my own past, I create a composite archive to relieve the pain of the civil war by reflecting on innocent childhood memories. i pays particular care to the histories of Jaffna women in whom she sees herself through their “fight for life”. 1 In doing so, I reclaim the figure of the woman from a colonial pictorial lexicon, reframing the Jaffna woman as a marker of strength, unity and heritage. The second part of Memories of Nostalgia replaces objects with maps of Jaffna. As i visually travels through this landscape, questioning the concepts of borders and boundaries, i rewrites the region’s history. I produce an alternative narrative where Jaffna is not devastated by war and altered by modernity, choosing instead to foreground hope and peace. i use of maps thus rewrites a violent history by salvaging forgotten memories and places, poignantly claiming that I subconsciously live in this world.

“Although coral reefs look like rocks and dead bodies, they are living beings. They breathe, grow and reproduce. They represent life in an invisible way. When I started doing self-portraits, when I started understanding my being, I realized that I am a coral in an ocean.”

My past work exhibits a range and multitudes of a journey that narrates a story of myself-discovery, aligning parallel to my observation of the ocean’s biodiversity. my in-depth understanding and knowledge of the nature of the sea, i believes is intrinsically linked to myself, in its areas of life’s purpose and intention. My journey of self-discovery was founded through my fondness for the seas and likeliness to its equally multilayered characteristics. From its sea creatures to the tranquility of its shores, the artist finds an intrinsic connection that inspires in my work. My past works within the mediums of water colors, ink on paper and threadwork and transparent materials. Also, I express my artistic approaches and stories through painting, drawings. sculptures, installations, and collages.

Sea series-
In my life sea is a most important place. also ocean is my favorite place .it releasing my pain stress and kindly of a meditation .when I go the beach I founds lots of corals forms. I dive in to the ocean and show underwater seen. So as my concept I inspired by ocean that because of my grandpa. My grandpa is a fisherman he is a ‘sammatti’ he can dive, he can go deep in to the sea and find so many pearls seahorse and sea creatures. so he told me most stories of dive and under sea .it’s make me to go the beach sides . This is my story behind of my concept why I love the beach. mostly I started to go beach’s ,I finally connections with the sea .physiologically I am more feels some of new emotions and some inner contact with oceans side .it’s really heal my all of physical- psychotic emotions. From this I realize my character on coral. So after my all practice sea is my part of my life. I express my inner emotions through coral. Corals is not a rock, it has a life .I realize that coral are look like myself. So I started to research about corals for sea change projects. Then I found that coral variety and biological meanings. Its more mean to my artworks lot. From my research I companied that my body- coral forms .coral biological name kind of brain corals, fire corals, favia corals, portrida corals so those corals represent my body so I used to my paintings and sculptures.
My Sea change coral hair sculptures series it was a new way of approach in my art practice. I used some new mediums for this series. Especially these sculptures interact with my emotions .its move into my skin through my soul. so I gave life in to dead corals .I made a new alive corals visuals .i make a new self expression physical-mental, conscious- unconscious connection in between the coral and hair. So I companied hard-soft mediums for these works. As my concept I used the new contemporary way of companied through the corals hair sculptures. Before I mentioned about that I used the different type of corals which look like my body parts. So those sculptures remind my skins and hairs so I used my hair in the corals. These works corals hair sculptures explores my inner feelings and psychological relationship with corals and reefs .ocean and beach side for the years become very calm and healing .while spending time by ocean I collecting dead corals. Through this practice I found that corals rocks have life .i feel myself within it .the corals sculptures representing my new way of self-portrait. Injects bodily signifiers such as hair to accentuate the myself characteristics of the corals forms.
Specifically the installations ‘breathing corals ‘coral in to the water tank it’s more related to my idea. I used the favia coral and long hair I attached in the corals holes so it can feel as hair on skins. And installed oxygen air into the water .so that affects same as a alive coral in the ocean.
